What it is

The Azure documentation hub on Microsoft Learn is the official reference for every Azure service. It has product documentation organised by category (compute, networking, storage, databases, identity, management and governance and many more), quickstarts and tutorials, language guides for Python, .NET, JavaScript, Java and Go, and infrastructure as code documentation for ARM templates, Bicep and Terraform. From the same hub you reach the Azure Architecture Center for design guidance and the Cloud Adoption Framework for how organisations set up Azure.

Is it worth reading alongside a course?

Yes. Microsoft updates the docs as services change, and Azure changes often: new defaults, renamed products and retired features. A course recorded a year ago may show screens or behaviour that no longer exist. When a course and the docs disagree, trust the docs. Reading them fluently is also a daily part of a cloud engineer's job, so practising now pays off in your first role.

Where to start

For a cloud engineering path, begin with these areas:

  • Azure role-based access control, managed identities and Key Vault for identity and secrets.
  • Virtual Network, network security groups, NAT Gateway and Application Gateway for networking. Read the page on default outbound access too: new virtual networks now default to private subnets, which changes how VMs reach the internet.
  • Virtual Machines, Container Apps and Azure Functions for compute, including the "Choose an Azure compute service" decision tree in the Architecture Center.
  • Blob Storage, Azure SQL Database and Azure Database for PostgreSQL for data.
  • Azure Monitor and Cost Management for operations and cost.
  • Bicep for Azure's native infrastructure as code.

How to use it well

Use the quickstarts to build something small, then read the conceptual page behind it to understand what you just did. Check the "limits and quotas" and pricing pages before you design around a service. Most pages have Azure CLI, PowerShell and portal tabs: choose the CLI tab so your steps are repeatable.

Free or paid

The documentation is free and needs no account. Tutorials create real resources, so use a budget, and delete the resource group when you finish.

Common questions

How is it different from Microsoft Learn training? The documentation is the reference. Microsoft Learn training paths, such as the AZ-900 and AZ-104 paths, are structured lessons with sandboxes that link into these docs.

Is it enough for AZ-104? Combined with the free AZ-104 learning paths and your own hands-on practice, it covers the exam's behaviour-level questions better than any third-party summary.
