Microsoft Learn: Implement data engineering solutions using Microsoft Fabric (DP-700 training)
Microsoft's official training for Fabric data engineering, the free self-paced route to the DP-700 exam. It covers ingesting data, building lakehouses and warehouses, real-time analytics and managing a Fabric environment, with exercises you can run on a Fabric trial.

What it is
Course DP-700T00 is Microsoft's official training for data engineering on Microsoft Fabric. It is offered as a paid four-day instructor-led course through training partners, and the same material is available free as self-paced learning paths on Microsoft Learn. It maps to exam DP-700, which leads to the Microsoft Certified: Fabric Data Engineer Associate certification.
What it covers
The self-paced route is made of five learning paths, as listed on the course page as of 2026-09:
- Ingest data with Microsoft Fabric: pipelines, Dataflows Gen2 and notebooks.
- Implement a lakehouse with Microsoft Fabric: OneLake, Delta tables, Apache Spark and the medallion architecture.
- Explore real-time analytics in Microsoft Fabric: Eventstream, Eventhouse and KQL.
- Work with data warehouses using Microsoft Fabric: loading, querying and securing a warehouse with T-SQL.
- Manage a Microsoft Fabric environment: workspaces, security, monitoring, version control and deployment pipelines.
Hands-on practice
Most modules end with an exercise in a Fabric workspace. Microsoft offers a 60-day Fabric trial capacity. Fabric needs a work or school (Microsoft Entra) account rather than a personal email address; if you only have a personal address, Microsoft Learn has a page, Start a Microsoft Fabric free trial with a personal email, that shows how to create one through a free Azure account. University accounts sometimes work if your institution allows trials.
Prerequisites
Microsoft describes the audience as data professionals with some experience of extracting, transforming and loading data, and skill in one of SQL, PySpark or KQL. Learn SQL, Python and the basics of lakehouses first; the course assumes them.
Is it worth your time?
Yes, if you chose Azure. Microsoft now positions Fabric as its main analytics platform for new work, and DP-700 replaced the retired Azure Data Engineer exam (DP-203). The material is free, well structured and current. Its limitation is that it teaches Fabric's way of doing things; balance it with vendor-neutral learning on modelling, orchestration and testing.
How to use it well
Do the exercises rather than only reading. After each learning path, rebuild what you made from memory in a fresh workspace. Take the free practice assessment on the certification page before booking the exam.
Common questions
Is the self-paced training really free? Yes. The learning paths on Microsoft Learn are free; only the instructor-led delivery and the exam cost money.
Does it cover Azure Data Factory and Synapse? It focuses on Fabric's own Data Factory, lakehouse and warehouse. Existing Synapse and Azure Data Factory skills transfer, and Microsoft publishes migration guides from Synapse to Fabric.

Stuck on something specific?
Writing only gets you so far. If you want an answer to your situation rather than the general case, book a session and we will work through it together. Sessions are free for approved Sefism members, and a few slots open each week.
