MongoDB Compass
MongoDB's free desktop GUI for browsing collections, editing documents, building queries and aggregation pipelines stage by stage, analysing schema from a sample, managing indexes and reading explain plans. It makes the shape of your data visible, which is exactly what you need while learning to model it. Runs on macOS, Windows and Linux.

What Compass is
Compass is MongoDB's desktop GUI for querying, aggregating and analysing your data in a visual environment. It connects to a local deployment or an Atlas cluster, and the documentation states it is "free to use and source available, and can be run on macOS, Windows, and Linux".
Why it helps while you learn
MongoDB collections do not enforce one shape unless you ask them to, so a field can be a string in one document and a number in the next. Compass makes that visible. The Schema tab samples documents and shows, for each field, which types appear and in what proportion, along with value ranges and frequencies. Spotting that 3% of your price fields are strings is much easier in a chart than in raw JSON.
The other features map neatly onto what you are learning:
- Documents: browse, filter, insert and edit documents in JSON mode or a field-by-field editor.
- Query bar: write filters, projections and sorts, and see results instantly. You can also generate a query from a plain English description with the built-in AI assistance, then read and adjust what it produced.
- Aggregation pipeline builder: add stages one at a time and see the output of each stage, which is the easiest way to understand what
$unwindor$groupactually does. - Explain plan: view a query's plan as a visual tree or raw JSON to see whether an index was used.
- Indexes and validation: create and inspect indexes, and add JSON Schema validation rules to a collection.
- Import and export: load CSV or JSON files into a collection, and export results.
- Embedded shell: a mongosh session inside the app for anything the GUI does not cover.
Compass or the shell?
Use both. Compass is better for exploring unfamiliar data, building pipelines step by step and reading query plans. The shell is better for repeatable scripts and for queries you want to copy straight into code. Compass even lets you export a query or pipeline as code for several languages.
Things to know
- A GUI makes it easy to edit production data by accident. Connect to production with a read-only user.
- MongoDB notes that the Readonly Edition of Compass will be deprecated, and suggests using a user with the
readrole and the read-only setting instead. - Schema analysis works on a sample, so rare shapes can be missed on very large collections.
Common questions
Is Compass free? Yes, there is no paid edition to unlock.
Does it work with Atlas? Yes. Copy the connection string from Atlas and paste it into Compass.
Best for: learners who want to see their data, and developers debugging queries, pipelines and indexes.
