MongoDB Manual

The official MongoDB Database Manual, covering documents, CRUD, indexes, data modelling, the aggregation pipeline, transactions, replication and sharding, plus the full operator reference. It is the source every tutorial is copied from, so when a blog post and the manual disagree, the manual wins. Free, current, and worth learning to navigate early.

What the manual covers

The Database Manual is MongoDB's own documentation for the server, and in September 2026 it covers version 8.3 by default, with a version switcher for older releases. The sections follow the order you meet things in practice:

  • Documents, databases and collections: what a BSON document is, how collections are organised and which sample datasets you can load to practise on.
  • CRUD operations: inserting, finding, updating and deleting, with every query and update operator documented.
  • Indexes: single field, compound, multikey, text, TTL, partial and unique indexes, and how to read a query plan.
  • Data modelling: embedding versus referencing, schema validation and the common design patterns.
  • Aggregation operations: every pipeline stage and expression operator.
  • Transactions, replication and sharding: how MongoDB keeps data consistent and spreads it across machines.
  • Time series, change streams, search and vector search: the features you reach for once the basics are solid.
  • Reference: the full list of commands, operators, limits and error codes.

Is it worth reading, or just searching?

Both, in that order. Most people only land on the manual from a search result, read one operator page and leave. That works for syntax, but the manual is also where the reasoning lives: why an index on { status: 1, createdAt: -1 } serves one query and not another, why a multi-document transaction costs more than a single document write, and why an array that grows without limit eventually hurts. Reading the data modelling and indexes sections end to end, once, pays back every time you design a collection.

How to use it well

  • Many examples can be switched between mongosh and the official drivers, so you see the same query in the shell and in your own language.
  • Check the version selector before copying an example. Features and defaults change between major versions, and a search engine may land you on an old page.
  • Keep the reference pages for operators and aggregation stages open while you work. They are the fastest way to answer "does $lookup support this?".
  • Read the limits and thresholds page once, so a document size or nesting limit never surprises you in production.

Prerequisites and time

You need nothing beyond curiosity and a place to run queries: a local install, an Atlas free cluster or even a browser playground. The overview, CRUD and data modelling sections take a few evenings. The rest is reference you come back to for years.

Common questions

Is the manual only for Atlas? No. It documents the database itself, and it covers Community Edition, Enterprise Advanced and Atlas deployments. Atlas specific features are marked.

Is it too dense for a beginner? Parts of the reference are, but the overview and CRUD pages are written with worked examples. Pair it with a course or a roadmap for the order, and use the manual for accuracy.

What can I do after it? Design a collection from the queries it must serve, choose indexes with a reason, write aggregation pipelines without guessing, and explain the trade-offs to a reviewer.

Best for: anyone using MongoDB, from a first project to a production system, who wants the authoritative answer rather than a paraphrase.
