What it covers
The n8n documentation is the official reference for the n8n workflow automation tool. It walks through setting up n8n on n8n Cloud or on your own server, building a first workflow and the key concepts: how data moves between nodes as items, how expressions work, and how credentials are stored. It then documents every built-in node and trigger, the Code node in JavaScript and Python, error handling and error workflows, AI features such as the AI Agent node, and the hosting guides for Docker, Docker Compose, configuration, security, scaling and updates. It also hosts the licence pages explaining n8n's fair-code Sustainable Use License.
Who it is for
Anyone using n8n, from beginners following the quickstart to people running self-hosted instances for clients. Automation freelancers use it daily for node settings, expression syntax and hosting questions.
How to use it
- Start with the quickstart and the key concepts on data structure and items; most confusion in n8n comes from not understanding items.
- Learn the expressions and Code node pages before building anything complex.
- Read the error handling pages before your first client workflow goes live.
- If you plan to self-host, read the Docker installation guide and the security and backup pages before putting a server on the internet.
- Read the licence page yourself before explaining it to a client.
For structured lessons, pair it with the free n8n Academy courses.
Is it worth it?
Yes, and it is free. It is the most accurate source on how n8n behaves in its current version, which matters because n8n moves quickly and older blog posts and videos often show outdated screens or settings. The structure was reorganised in 2026, so some older links redirect to new locations.
Free versus paid
The documentation is free. n8n itself is free to self-host under its licence, and n8n Cloud is paid. As of 2026-09 the pricing page lists Starter, Pro, Business and Enterprise plans; check it for current prices.
Common questions
Does it cover Python? Yes, the Code node supports Python; the docs explain the differences between self-hosted and Cloud, such as package availability.
Is there a community for questions it does not answer? Yes, the official n8n community forum.
Can I use it to learn automation in general? Partly. It explains n8n well, but assumes some knowledge of APIs and JSON.

Stuck on something specific?
Writing only gets you so far. If you want an answer to your situation rather than the general case, book a session and we will work through it together. Sessions are free for approved Sefism members, and a few slots open each week.
