What it is

Payoneer is a payments company that helps freelancers, contractors and businesses receive money from abroad. As of 2026-09 its site says it works across "190+ countries and territories", lets you "get paid in 70+ currencies" and offers receiving accounts that let you "get paid like a local in 13 currencies" (source: payoneer.com). It also highlights a long partnership with Upwork for paying freelancers.

Why remote contractors use it

A receiving account gives you bank details in currencies such as US dollars, euros or pounds, so a client abroad can pay you with a normal local transfer. You then withdraw to your local bank account in your own currency, or spend with a Payoneer card where available. In countries where some other payment services are limited, Payoneer is often one of the practical options.

Fees (as of 2026-09)

The homepage does not list fees; Payoneer directs users to its pricing page. Costs can include fees on receiving certain payments, currency conversion and withdrawals. Always compare the amount that lands in your local account with at least one other method, rather than looking at one fee in isolation.

Availability and rules

Features differ by country, and some countries have rules on how export income should reach local banks. Check Payoneer's pages for your country, and your local tax rules, before agreeing a payment method with a client.

How to use it well

  • Open and verify the account before you need it; verification can take time.
  • Test a small payment first.
  • Keep invoices and payment records for tax.
  • Protect the account with two-factor authentication. Never share codes.

Watch out for

Scammers impersonate payment platforms with "payment pending" emails that ask you to log in through a link. Always type the address yourself.

Common questions

Do I need it if my employer uses an EOR? Usually not; EOR salaries go to a local bank.

Is it better than Wise? It depends on your country and route; compare both.

Can clients pay me through it directly? Yes, through your receiving account details or a payment request.
