What the course is
Professor Messer (James Messer) publishes free video courses for CompTIA certifications. His N10-009 Network+ course is the index of free training videos for the current Network+ exam: 87 videos with a total run time of 12 hours and 55 minutes, according to the course page. The course opens with how to prepare for the exam, then follows the official objectives section by section, starting with the OSI model, network appliances, cloud networking concepts, ports and protocols.
What Network+ is, and whether you need it
CompTIA Network+ is a vendor-neutral networking certification. The current exam, N10-009, launched in June 2024. CompTIA lists up to 90 questions in 90 minutes, mixing multiple-choice and performance-based questions, with a passing score of 720 on a scale of 100 to 900. Its domains are networking concepts, network implementation, network operations, network security and network troubleshooting. CompTIA recommends prior experience in a junior network or support role.
On a network engineering path, most learners take either Network+ or the CCNA first, not both. Network+ suits support and NOC roles in organisations that run several vendors, and some employers list it by name. The CCNA is asked for more often in network engineering adverts. Read job adverts for the roles you want and let them decide.
Why the course is worth your time
Even if you are heading for the CCNA, this course is a fast, clear way to understand the vendor-neutral basics. Each video is short and focused on one objective, so it works well for revision and for filling gaps. The explanations are precise without being dense.
Free and paid parts
All the training videos are free to watch on the site and on YouTube. Professor Messer sells optional extras, such as printed or downloadable course notes and downloadable videos, for those who want them. You can pass using free resources plus your own labs and practice.
How to use it well
- Download the official exam objectives from CompTIA and tick them off as you go.
- Watch a section, then practise it: subnet by hand, capture traffic in Wireshark, configure a lab in Packet Tracer.
- Watch the study group replays on the site when a topic needs more explanation.
- Finish with timed practice questions before booking the exam.
Common questions
Is it enough to pass? Many learners combine it with practice questions and hands-on work. The videos cover the objectives; practice builds speed and confidence.
Does it teach Cisco commands? No. Network+ is vendor-neutral. For Cisco configuration, use a CCNA course alongside it.
