PyCharm

JetBrains's Python IDE, with automated refactorings such as rename, extract function and inline that work across a whole project, plus inspections that flag code smells as you type. Since version 2025.1 it is one product with free core features and an optional Pro subscription.

What PyCharm is

PyCharm is JetBrains's integrated development environment (IDE) for Python. It indexes your whole project, so it knows where every function, class and variable is defined and used. That knowledge powers its navigation, inspections and, most importantly for design work, its automated refactorings.

Free or paid?

Starting with PyCharm 2025.1, JetBrains combined PyCharm Community and Professional into one unified product. The core functionality, including Jupyter notebook support, is free. When you install it you get a 30-day free trial of Pro features; after that you can buy a Pro subscription or keep using the free core features. The free core covers everything a software design roadmap needs.

Refactoring in PyCharm

Python's dynamic nature makes renaming by hand risky: a find and replace also changes strings, comments and unrelated names. PyCharm's refactorings understand the code instead. The documented shortcuts for Windows and Linux include:

  • Refactor This (Ctrl+Alt+Shift+T): a menu of every refactoring available at the caret.
  • Rename (Shift+F6): place the caret on a name and rename it everywhere it is used.
  • Extract Function (Ctrl+Alt+M): turn a selected block into a named function, with PyCharm working out the parameters.
  • Inline (Ctrl+Alt+N): the reverse of Extract Function.

Other refactorings, such as introducing variables and changing signatures, are available from the Refactor This menu.

Why it helps you learn design

Refactoring is a skill of many small, safe steps with tests run after each one. An IDE that performs each step correctly in a second makes that way of working practical. PyCharm's inspections also point out problems as you type, such as unused variables, shadowed names or type mismatches when you use type hints, which trains your eye for code smells.

Other features you will use

A visual debugger, a built-in test runner that works with pytest, Git integration, virtual environment management and support for type checking with your type hints.

Common questions

PyCharm or VS Code for Python? Both are good. VS Code is lighter; PyCharm's refactorings and inspections are deeper, which helps while you are learning to refactor.

Do I need Pro? Not for this roadmap. Pro adds features such as deeper web framework and database support.

Best for: Python learners and developers who want reliable automated refactoring and inspections.
