What it is

A skill map for the engineering management track: one to ones and feedback, hiring and onboarding, performance management, planning and delivery, stakeholder work, technical direction and the business context.

Its most useful function

Deciding against it. A lot of engineers move into management because it is the visible next step, discover the job is mostly meetings, conflict and writing, and find the route back is harder than the route in. Reading a full map of the responsibilities is a cheap way to find out whether the work appeals before you commit to it.

If you do want it

Use it as a gap list and start acquiring the pieces you can while still an engineer, particularly interviewing, mentoring and running a project. Managers are frequently promoted from people who were already doing half the job.

Best for: senior engineers weighing the management track.

Stuck on something specific?

Writing only gets you so far. If you want an answer to your situation rather than the general case, book a session and we will work through it together. Every session is free; a few slots open each week.
