UX Design Roadmap

roadmap.sh's interactive map of the skills a UX designer needs, from how people make decisions to research, design and measuring results. Use it as a checklist to spot gaps in your own plan, not as a course.

What it is

The UX Design roadmap on roadmap.sh is a free, interactive diagram of the topics that make up user experience work. Each node opens a short explanation with links to articles and videos, and you can mark topics as done if you sign in. roadmap.sh is a community-driven project best known for its developer roadmaps, and the UX map follows the same format.

Who it is for

Students and career changers who want to see the whole field at a glance before choosing what to learn, and developers who want to understand what their design colleagues do. It is also useful for working designers who want to check for blind spots, such as behaviour design or measuring impact.

How to use it well

Do not try to learn every node in order. Use it the way you would use a map on a trip: to see where you are and what is nearby. A good routine is:

  1. Skim the whole roadmap once to see the shape of the field.
  2. Compare it with the stages of the Sefism UI/UX roadmap, which gives you a learning order, practice and milestones.
  3. When a topic feels thin in your own work, open that node and follow one or two of its links.

Is it worth it?

Yes, as a free reference. Its strength is breadth: it covers areas that many beginner courses skip, such as how people form habits and how to measure whether a design changed behaviour. Its limits are the same as any map: it tells you what exists, not how deep to go or what to build. The linked resources vary in quality, so prefer official and research-backed sources when a node offers several.

Free or paid?

The roadmap itself is free to view. Signing in lets you track progress. roadmap.sh also offers extra features such as an AI tutor; check the site for what is free at any given time.

What you can do after

You will not be a designer from reading a roadmap. You will know which skills exist, which ones you have, and which to learn next, which makes every course and project you pick more deliberate.

Common questions

Is this the same as a design course? No. It is an index of topics. Pair it with a structured path and real projects.

Is there a separate roadmap for design systems? Yes, roadmap.sh also has a Design System roadmap, which is useful once you are building components and tokens.
