roadmap.sh: WordPress

roadmap.sh's WordPress roadmap is a free, interactive map of what a WordPress developer learns, from core concepts and the block editor through theme and plugin development, hooks, the REST API, security and performance. Each node opens a short explanation with links to go further. It is most useful as a checklist for spotting gaps, not as a course to follow from top to bottom.

What this roadmap is

roadmap.sh publishes community-maintained learning maps for many roles, and this one covers the path to becoming a WordPress developer. It is a single interactive diagram: you click a node and a side panel explains the topic in a few lines and links to articles, documentation and videos. You can create a free account to mark nodes as done, learning or skipped, which turns the diagram into a personal progress tracker.

What it covers

The map starts with WordPress concepts and moves into the areas a working developer needs. Nodes on the page include the block editor, block patterns and block themes, theme development, plugin basics, hooks and filters, custom post types and taxonomies, the REST API, multisite, security fundamentals and performance optimisation. It sits next to separate roadmap.sh maps for PHP and frontend development, which is useful because WordPress work leans on both.

Is it worth your time?

Yes, as a map. It is the quickest way to see the whole territory in one view and to answer "what have I not touched yet?". It is less useful as a teaching resource: the node descriptions are short, and the linked resources vary in quality and age. Pair it with the official handbooks at developer.wordpress.org and the free courses on Learn WordPress, which teach the same topics properly.

How to use it well

  • Open it once at the start and mark what you already know honestly. Anything you have only read about is not done.
  • Use it to order your learning: site building and the block editor first, then themes, then plugins and hooks, then the REST API and performance.
  • Revisit it after each project. Building a real client site will expose gaps the diagram names, such as caching, backups or security hardening.
  • Do not try to tick every node before you build anything. Most freelance and agency WordPress work needs a solid core (themes, plugins, hooks, performance, security) far more than edge topics like multisite.

Prerequisites and time

No prerequisites to read it. To act on the developer half you need basic HTML, CSS and enough PHP to read a function and follow a loop. There is no fixed duration: people use it over months as a reference.

Free or paid

The roadmap itself is free to view without an account. An account is also free and adds progress tracking. roadmap.sh offers optional extras, including an AI tutor feature, which you do not need to get value from the map.

Common questions

Is this an official WordPress resource? No. It is maintained by the roadmap.sh community, independent of WordPress.org.

Does it cover WooCommerce or Shopify? Its focus is WordPress development itself. For stores, use the WooCommerce documentation alongside it.

Is it current? roadmap.sh updates maps over time, but always check a topic against developer.wordpress.org, because WordPress ships major releases several times a year.
