seaborn: Statistical Data Visualisation
The official seaborn tutorial and API reference. Seaborn builds on Matplotlib and works directly with pandas DataFrames, so one line gives you distributions, relationships, categorical comparisons and regression fits with sensible defaults. The tutorial also teaches how to choose the right chart, not just how to draw it.

What seaborn is
The docs describe seaborn as "a library for making statistical graphics in Python. It builds on top of matplotlib and integrates closely with pandas data structures." You pass a DataFrame and name the columns you want on each axis, colour or facet, and seaborn handles grouping, aggregation, confidence intervals and legends.
Why it is worth learning for data science
Exploratory analysis is mostly asking questions with charts: how is this variable distributed, does it differ between groups, do these two move together? Seaborn is designed around exactly those questions, and its defaults are good enough that you spend time on the data rather than on axis labels. It is also a gentle way into statistical thinking, because many of its plots show uncertainty by default.
What the tutorial covers
The User guide and tutorial is organised in the order you will need it:
- An introduction, an overview of the plotting functions, and the data structures seaborn accepts (long form versus wide form is worth reading slowly)
- The
seaborn.objectsinterface, a newer declarative way to compose plots - Visualising statistical relationships, distributions and categorical data
- Statistical estimation and error bars, and estimating regression fits
- Multi-plot grids for faceting by a variable
- Figure aesthetics and choosing colour palettes
The error bars page is especially useful: it explains what the shaded bands actually represent, which many people get wrong.
How long it takes and prerequisites
Reading the tutorial with a notebook open takes about a week of evenings. You need basic pandas (loading a CSV, selecting columns) and ideally a first look at Matplotlib.
Free or paid?
Free and open source.
What you can do afterwards
Produce a clear exploratory analysis of a new dataset in an hour: distributions of every key variable, comparisons across groups and the obvious relationships, each chosen for the question it answers.
Common questions
Seaborn or Matplotlib? Both. The docs note that full customisation "will require some knowledge of matplotlib's concepts and API". Use seaborn to draw, Matplotlib to fine-tune.
Is it still maintained? The 0.13 series is the current documented version. It is stable and widely used, so tutorials written for it remain accurate.
Best for: learners who can load data in pandas and now want to explore it visually and honestly.
