What this checklist is

A practical checklist for anyone moving into software development from another career: teaching, finance, healthcare, engineering, sales or anything else. It covers choosing a direction, building a realistic learning plan, turning study into projects people can see, using the domain knowledge you already have, building a network, planning your money runway and choosing which first roles to aim for.

It has 7 chapters and 31 checks, each with how to verify it and how much it matters. For people moving into software from another career.

Chapter by chapter

1. Choose a direction (4 checks)

"Tech" is many jobs. Pick one target direction first so your learning, projects and networking all point the same way.

2. Build a learning plan you can keep (5 checks)

A plan that fits around your current life beats an ambitious plan you abandon in week three.

3. Build proof of skill (5 checks)

Employers hiring a career switcher want to see that you can do the work. Turn learning into finished projects people can open and read.

4. Use your previous domain (4 checks)

Your old career is an advantage, not something to hide. Domain knowledge is hard to teach and valuable to teams building for that domain.

5. Build a network in a new field (4 checks)

Most switchers start knowing nobody in tech. A small, genuine network gives you advice, feedback and introductions.

6. Plan your money runway (4 checks)

A switch takes time. Plan your finances so pressure does not force you to quit learning or accept a bad first role.

7. Target your first role (5 checks)

Your first tech role is a stepping stone. Aim for one where you will learn fast, and widen your search beyond the obvious titles.

How it works on Sefism

The checklist is one page: each check has a severity (must, should or nice to have) and a concrete way to verify it, and members can tick checks off as they go. The opening chapters are open to everyone. Adding it to your account uses credits, opens every chapter and keeps your progress.

Every claim is checked against the sources listed on the page (7 cited).
