What this best practices guide is
A practical guide to growing from junior to senior engineer and beyond, checked against public career ladders such as the Dropbox Engineering Career Framework and the GitLab handbook. It covers how ladders describe each level, what scope and impact mean, ownership, working with your manager, using feedback, collecting promotion evidence, choosing projects, and the staff and manager paths.
It has 8 chapters and 32 practices, each with why it matters, what to do and what to avoid. For junior and mid-level engineers aiming higher.
Chapter by chapter
1. Understand how career ladders work (4 practices)
Most companies describe each level in writing. Read yours, learn what changes between levels, and stop guessing what senior means.
2. Grow your scope and impact (4 practices)
Impact is the currency of every ladder. Learn what it means where you work and aim your effort at it.
3. Own outcomes, not tasks (4 practices)
Ownership is the trait every ladder describes at senior levels. Practise it early, on whatever you are given.
4. Work with your manager on your growth (4 practices)
Your manager is your strongest advocate, but only for work they know about and goals they understand.
5. Seek and use feedback (4 practices)
Feedback is how you find the gaps you cannot see yourself. Ask for it specifically, receive it calmly and act on it.
6. Build the evidence for a promotion (4 practices)
Promotions recognise sustained work at the next level. Collect the evidence as you go, not the week before the review.
7. Choose projects that grow you (4 practices)
The work you take on shapes the evidence you can show. Choose deliberately when you have a choice, and shape the work when you do not.
8. Choose between the staff and manager paths (4 practices)
Above senior, most companies offer two parallel paths. Learn what each one actually involves before you choose.
How it works on Sefism
The guide reads like a short course: a syllabus, then one chapter per page in a focused reader, with a quiz at the end of each chapter for members. The opening chapters are open to everyone. Adding it to your account uses credits, opens every chapter and keeps your progress.
Every claim is checked against the sources listed on the page (7 cited).

Stuck on something specific?
Writing only gets you so far. If you want an answer to your situation rather than the general case, book a session and we will work through it together. Sessions are free for approved Sefism members, and a few slots open each week.
