What this checklist is
A step-by-step checklist for software engineers moving to another country for a job. It covers researching work visa routes on official government sites, checking a job offer and sponsoring employer, avoiding immigration and job offer scams, preparing documents, planning money and taxes, the weeks before you fly, and the registrations and habits that matter in your first weeks. It is general guidance, not immigration or legal advice.
It has 7 chapters and 34 checks, each with how to verify it and how much it matters. For developers moving abroad for work.
Chapter by chapter
1. Research visa routes on official sites (5 checks)
Understand which legal routes exist for your destination, who applies, and what they require, using only official government sources.
2. Check the offer and the sponsoring employer (5 checks)
A job offer is the foundation of most work visas. Make sure the employer can sponsor you and the offer says what you need it to say.
3. Avoid immigration and job offer scams (4 checks)
People who want to work abroad are targeted by fake job offers, fake consultants and fake government sites. Know the patterns.
4. Prepare documents (5 checks)
Gather originals, certified copies and translations early. Missing documents are the most common reason moves get delayed.
5. Money, tax and obligations at home (4 checks)
The first months abroad are expensive. Plan savings, how money moves, and what you owe in each country.
6. The weeks before you fly (5 checks)
Once the visa is approved, line up housing, health cover and a work start that leaves time to settle.
7. Your first weeks in the new country (6 checks)
Registrations, bank accounts and settling in. Do them in the right order and keep your visa conditions in mind.
How it works on Sefism
The checklist is one page: each check has a severity (must, should or nice to have) and a concrete way to verify it, and members can tick checks off as they go. The opening chapters are open to everyone. Adding it to your account uses credits, opens every chapter and keeps your progress.
Every claim is checked against the sources listed on the page (6 cited).
