Remote Developer Job Checklist
A practical checklist for getting and keeping a remote developer job, often with a company in another country. It covers checking that an employer is real, understanding whether you are an employee or a contractor, the contract clauses that matter, getting paid across borders, your home setup and security, working across time zones, writing for asynchronous teams, staying visible and protecting your health. It is practical guidance, not legal or tax advice.

What this checklist is
A practical checklist for getting and keeping a remote developer job, often with a company in another country. It covers checking that an employer is real, understanding whether you are an employee or a contractor, the contract clauses that matter, getting paid across borders, your home setup and security, working across time zones, writing for asynchronous teams, staying visible and protecting your health. It is practical guidance, not legal or tax advice.
It has 8 chapters and 38 checks, each with how to verify it and how much it matters. For developers working remotely for teams abroad.
Chapter by chapter
1. Check the employer is real (5 checks)
Remote job seekers are a favourite target for scams. A few minutes of checking before you share documents or accept an offer protects your money and identity.
2. Read the offer and contract (6 checks)
Know what kind of arrangement you are signing, who your legal employer is, and how pay, notice and ownership work before you accept.
3. Get paid across borders (5 checks)
Set up how money reaches you, keep records from the first payment, and understand the tax paperwork you may be asked for.
4. Workspace, equipment and security (5 checks)
Your home is now your office. Make it reliable for calls and deep work, and keep company data safe.
5. Work across time zones (4 checks)
Make your hours predictable, protect the overlap with your team, and never leave people guessing what time you mean.
6. Work asynchronously (5 checks)
Distributed teams run on writing. These habits make you easy to work with when nobody is online at the same time as you.
7. Stay visible and keep growing (4 checks)
Remote engineers can do excellent work that nobody notices. Make your work and your goals visible on purpose.
8. Boundaries and wellbeing (4 checks)
Remote work can quietly stretch into every hour of the day. Protect your health so you can keep doing good work.
How it works on Sefism
The checklist is one page: each check has a severity (must, should or nice to have) and a concrete way to verify it, and members can tick checks off as they go. The opening chapters are open to everyone. Adding it to your account uses credits, opens every chapter and keeps your progress.
Every claim is checked against the sources listed on the page (7 cited).

Stuck on something specific?
Writing only gets you so far. If you want an answer to your situation rather than the general case, book a session and we will work through it together. Sessions are free for approved Sefism members, and a few slots open each week.
