Dawn: Shopify's Reference Theme
Dawn is the source-available Online Store 2.0 theme Shopify published as a reference for how a modern theme should be structured: sections, blocks, JSON templates and HTML-first markup with JavaScript only where it earns its place. Reading its code is one of the fastest ways to learn real-world Liquid. Shopify has since released Horizon as its newer flagship theme, so Dawn is best treated as a learning reference rather than the only starting point.

What Dawn is
Dawn is a free Shopify theme whose full source code lives on GitHub. Shopify built it as the reference theme for Online Store 2.0, the theme architecture that introduced JSON templates, sections on every page and app blocks. The README describes its principles plainly: HTML first, JavaScript only when necessary, fast by default and built on web standards. It is also a working theme that thousands of stores run, so the code has to handle real product pages, carts, filters and accessibility, not just demo content.
Why it is worth reading as a learner
Most Liquid tutorials show a snippet in isolation. Dawn shows how the pieces fit together in a production theme:
- how
layout/theme.liquidwraps every page - how JSON templates in
templates/list the sections a merchant can reorder in the theme editor - how each file in
sections/declares its settings and blocks in a{% schema %}tag - how
snippets/keep repeated markup such as product cards in one place - how small custom elements in
assets/add behaviour without a front end framework
Open a section such as the main product section, find the schema at the bottom, then change a setting in the theme editor and watch what the Liquid does with it. That loop teaches more than any slide deck.
Dawn, Horizon and the Skeleton theme (as of 2026-09)
In 2025 Shopify launched Horizon, a newer family of first-party themes built around theme blocks that can be nested and reused. Its source is also on GitHub (github.com/Shopify/horizon), but its README says themes based on Horizon are not eligible for the Shopify Theme Store and that Shopify is not taking contributions to it. For a brand new theme, the shopify.dev getting started tutorial now uses the minimal Skeleton theme via shopify theme init. Dawn remains maintained on GitHub and is still a clear, well documented example of Online Store 2.0 patterns. A sensible order: learn the patterns from Dawn, start your own experiments from Skeleton, and study Horizon when you want to see nested theme blocks.
Prerequisites and time
You need comfortable HTML and CSS, basic JavaScript, and the Shopify CLI connected to a development store. Plan a few evenings to find your way around the folders, and a couple of weeks of small edits before the structure feels natural.
Common questions
Can I sell a theme built on Dawn? Dawn's README says Theme Store submissions must be substantively different from Dawn, and the licence file sets the terms, so read both before building anything commercial.
Should I edit Dawn directly for a client? Customising a copy of a free theme is common for client stores. Keep your changes in version control and note what you changed, because pulling in later upstream updates is manual work.
Is the main branch safe to use? The README warns that main can contain unreleased work and points to the stable version in the Theme Store for live stores.
