Shopify Partner Program
The Shopify Partner Program is how freelancers, agencies and developers build stores for clients, make themes and apps, and get paid by Shopify for referrals. Joining is free and gives you development stores to build and test in before handing a store to its owner. Read the current Partner Program Agreement before relying on any commission figure.

What the program is for
If you want to build Shopify stores for other people, you will almost certainly work through a Partner account. It is Shopify's program for agencies, freelancers, theme developers and app developers. The public page (as of 2026-09) says partners earn through apps, themes, store builds and referrals, and reports $1.3 billion paid to partners in 2025. That is a total across the whole ecosystem, not a sign of what an individual will earn.
Development stores and client transfer stores
The practical reason to join early is the stores. As a partner you can create stores to build and test in without paying a subscription while you work on them. Shopify's help centre (as of 2026-09) says these client transfer stores are now created from the Dev Dashboard, Shopify's newer hub for apps, stores and team access, rather than only from the older Partner Dashboard. Before transfer they have limits worth knowing:
- only free and partner-friendly apps can be installed; custom and draft apps cannot
- real transactions are not supported, and shipping labels are test only
- the online store stays in private mode
- after transfer, the store is not eligible for promotions or free trials
When the store is ready, you transfer ownership to the client, who then picks a paid plan. The client should own the store, the domain and the billing from day one of going live.
Referral commissions
Shopify pays partners a recurring referral commission on stores they build and transfer to clients who move to a paid plan. The percentage, eligible plans and conditions are set in the Partner Program Agreement and have changed over the years; Shopify's partner blog has described it as up to 20% of the subscription fee on standard plans, but read the current agreement and the Partner help centre for today's terms before you quote anything to a client or build a business plan on it.
Who should join and when
- Learners: join as soon as you start learning Liquid, so every tutorial has a real store to test in.
- Freelancers: your client work, collaborator access to existing stores and referral income all run through the account.
- App and theme developers: app listings, theme submissions and payouts are managed here.
Cautions
Be wary of anyone selling "Shopify partner" status or pre-built stores with promised income. Collaborator access to a client's existing store should be requested through Shopify, never by asking for the owner's password. And because payouts depend on supported payout methods in your country, check the payout options in the Partner help centre before you count on referral income.
