SQL Server Management Studio (SSMS)
Microsoft's free Windows tool for querying and administering SQL Server and Azure SQL: a query editor, object explorer, actual execution plans, security, backup and restore, and SQL Server Agent jobs. On macOS and Linux, Microsoft points to VS Code with the MSSQL extension instead.

What it is
SQL Server Management Studio (SSMS) is Microsoft's integrated tool for SQL Server, Azure SQL Database, Azure SQL Managed Instance and SQL database in Microsoft Fabric. As of 2026-09 the current major version is SSMS 22, and its documentation includes GitHub Copilot integration (source: Microsoft Learn, SSMS documentation). It runs on Windows only.
It combines a query editor with IntelliSense, an object explorer for every database object, graphical estimated and actual execution plans, and administration screens for logins and permissions, backup and restore, SQL Server Agent jobs and monitoring.
Is SSMS or VS Code right for you?
Microsoft retired Azure Data Studio on 28 February 2026 and recommends VS Code with the MSSQL extension for everyday development on any operating system, while SSMS remains the supported home for SQL Server Agent and full administration (source: Microsoft Learn, "What's happening with Azure Data Studio", as of 2026-09). In practice:
- On Windows, install SSMS: it is the most complete tool and what most SQL Server jobs expect you to know.
- On macOS or Linux, use VS Code with the MSSQL extension, and run SQL Server itself in a container.
- Many developers use both: VS Code for queries next to their code, SSMS for plans and administration.
Free vs paid
SSMS is free. The MSSQL extension for VS Code is also free.
How to use it well
- Learn to include the actual execution plan (Ctrl+M) and to turn on SET STATISTICS IO, TIME; together they show what a query really cost.
- Save scripts to files in a Git repository rather than leaving them in unsaved tabs.
- Use a separate login with limited rights for everyday work, and keep sa for administration.
- Treat missing-index suggestions in plans as hints to evaluate, not instructions.
Watch out for
Older tutorials may tell you to install Azure Data Studio: it no longer receives updates or security fixes. SSMS changes between major versions, so screenshots in older material may not match.
Common questions
Can I use SSMS on a Mac? Not natively. Use VS Code with the MSSQL extension, or a Windows virtual machine if you need SSMS specifically.
Does it include SQL Server? No. Install a SQL Server edition, such as the free Developer or Express edition, separately.
