What it is
State of FinOps is an annual survey run by the FinOps Foundation since 2020. The results are published free on data.finops.org with interactive charts. It is the closest thing the field has to a census: who does FinOps, what they work on and what is changing.
What the 2026 edition found
- Who answered: 1,192 respondents representing more than 83 billion USD of annual cloud spend.
- Current priorities: workload optimisation and waste reduction first, then expanding FinOps beyond public cloud, governance and policy, and organisational alignment.
- AI: 98% of organisations now manage AI spend, up from 31% two years earlier, and AI cost management was named the number one skill teams need to build.
- Where FinOps sits: 78% of FinOps teams report to the CTO or CIO.
- Wider scope: 90% manage SaaS spend or plan to, 64% manage licensing, 57% private cloud and 48% data centre costs.
- A telling quote: practitioners say they have hit the "big rocks" of waste and now face many smaller savings that take more effort to capture.
Why read it as a learner
It tells you what employers are worried about this year, which is what interviewers ask about and what job posts list. In 2026 that clearly means AI and GPU spend, SaaS and licences, and automation of the routine work. It also shows that FinOps is no longer only a finance function: most teams sit with technology leadership, which is good news for engineers moving into the field.
How to use it well
Read the key findings, then pick two charts that relate to the stage of the roadmap you are on and write one sentence on what each means for a small company. When you talk to a FinOps team, ask which findings match their experience and which do not. Treat the numbers as a survey of people who chose to answer, not a measure of the whole industry.
