What it is
Test Automation University (TAU) is a free learning platform for test automation, powered by Applitools, a company that sells visual testing tools. Courses are taught by experienced testers and engineers and are organised into chapters with videos, transcripts, code and quizzes. Learners earn certificates of completion and can follow learning paths for particular tools or languages.
What you can learn there
The catalogue covers a wide range of automation topics. Relevant courses for this roadmap include Introduction to Playwright, Advanced Playwright and Playwright with JavaScript; Selenium with Java courses; API Test Automation with Postman; and Automating Your API Tests with REST Assured. There are also courses on test design, framework structure, CI, mobile testing, visual testing and programming languages for testers.
Is it worth your time?
Yes, as a structured companion to official documentation. Courses are free, short enough to finish, and taught by people who automate for a living. Two cautions: some courses were recorded several years ago, so check the tool version against the official docs and prefer newer courses where there is a choice; and because Applitools sells visual testing tools, some courses naturally use its products. Everything you need for this roadmap is available without paying for any tool.
Prerequisites
Depends on the course. Most automation courses assume basic programming in the course's language; TAU also offers introductory programming courses for testers.
Free or paid?
Free. You sign up with an account to track progress and earn certificates.
How to use it well
Take one course at a time, in the tool you chose, and build your own project alongside instead of only copying the course code. After each chapter, apply the idea to your practice suite. Put the certificate on your profile if you like, but put your repository first: that is what reviewers open.
Common questions
Are the certificates recognised by employers? They show initiative, but they are certificates of course completion, not industry certifications. Your portfolio carries more weight.
Which course should I start with? The introductory course for your chosen tool: Introduction to Playwright, a Selenium with Java course, or API Test Automation with Postman.

Stuck on something specific?
Writing only gets you so far. If you want an answer to your situation rather than the general case, book a session and we will work through it together. Sessions are free for approved Sefism members, and a few slots open each week.
