The Odin Project
The Odin Project is a free, open source full stack web development curriculum. After a Foundations course, you choose a Full Stack JavaScript path (HTML and CSS, JavaScript, React, databases and Node.js with Express) or a Full Stack Ruby on Rails path. You set up your own environment, read real documentation and build specified projects rather than coding in a sandbox. It suits self-taught beginners and career changers who want a complete path and are prepared to work hard.

How the curriculum is organised
Everyone starts with Foundations, a hands-on introduction to the essential tools: the command line, Git and GitHub, HTML, CSS, basic JavaScript and how the web works. You then choose a path:
- Full Stack JavaScript (7 courses): Intermediate HTML and CSS, JavaScript (including DOM work, object-oriented programming and fetching data from APIs), Advanced HTML and CSS (responsive design, accessibility, animation), React, databases, Node.js with Express, and Getting Hired.
- Full Stack Ruby on Rails (8 courses): a similar front end grounding plus Ruby, databases and Rails for the backend.
Each course mixes reading assignments, often pointing to high-quality external articles and official docs, with projects you build yourself. The curriculum is open source and maintained by volunteers; the curriculum repository on GitHub had about 13.1k stars and 16.8k forks in September 2026. The project is free and community funded.
What makes it different
It refuses to hold your hand. You install your own tools on your own machine (Linux, macOS or Windows with WSL), you read real documentation, and projects come as specifications rather than walkthroughs. That is uncomfortable, and it is the point: the gap between finishing a video course and being employable is largely the ability to work without step-by-step instructions. You also finish with a portfolio of projects on GitHub.
How long it really takes
Months, not weeks. Many learners studying part time take six months to a year or more to finish a full path, depending on hours available and background. Progress is uneven: some projects take an evening, others (such as the JavaScript and React capstones) can take weeks.
How to succeed with it
- Set a weekly schedule and keep it. Consistency matters more than intensity.
- Join the Discord community and ask for help after you have genuinely tried. The community is active and supportive, and explaining your problem often solves it.
- Do not skip projects or copy solutions. The projects are where the learning happens.
- Push every project to GitHub with a README and a live demo link.
- When stuck for more than a day, look at other learners' submissions for ideas, then close them and write your own.
Weak spots
The reliance on external articles means the reading quality varies. The self-directed format can feel isolating without a study partner. And because it is text-based, learners who need video explanations may want to supplement it.
Common questions
The Odin Project or freeCodeCamp? freeCodeCamp is a gentler, browser-based start. The Odin Project is harder and more realistic, and produces stronger portfolio projects. Many people start with freeCodeCamp and move here.
The Odin Project or Full Stack Open? Full Stack Open assumes you can already program and moves faster, with more on testing, TypeScript and CI. The Odin Project starts from zero.
JavaScript or Rails path? JavaScript, for most people, because of job demand and because React and Node.js appear in many job listings. Choose Rails if you are targeting companies that use it.
Best for: career changers and self-taught beginners who want a complete free path and are prepared to work for it.

Stuck on something specific?
Writing only gets you so far. If you want an answer to your situation rather than the general case, book a session and we will work through it together. Sessions are free for approved Sefism members, and a few slots open each week.
