Toptal
A talent network that places screened freelance engineers, designers and other specialists with client companies. Its published screening has five steps and it says fewer than 3% of applicants are accepted, so it suits experienced engineers with strong English more than beginners.

What it is
Toptal describes itself as "an exclusive network of the world's top talent in business, design, marketing, and technology". Companies come to Toptal to hire freelancers; engineers apply to join the network and, once accepted, are matched with client engagements, many of them long-term and remote.
How the screening works (as published, 2026-09)
Toptal's own "top 3%" page lists five steps for applicants (source: toptal.com/top-3-percent):
- Language and personality: an English communication interview and personality assessment.
- In-depth skill review: technical knowledge and problem-solving assessments.
- Live screening: interviews with domain experts, including live exercises.
- Test project: an assignment that usually takes one to three weeks.
- Continued excellence: ongoing performance standards once you are in.
It says that, of the thousands of applications it sees each month, typically fewer than 3% are accepted, and that screening usually takes three to eight weeks.
Is it worth applying?
If you have several years of solid professional experience, strong written and spoken English and can commit time to a multi-week process, it can lead to steady, well-paid contract work. If you are a student or early in your career, you are unlikely to pass yet; build experience first and come back. Passing is not the end: you still speak with each client before an engagement starts, and there can be gaps between engagements.
Free vs paid
Clients pay Toptal. The screening page does not mention any application fee for talent. Be wary of anyone claiming to charge you to "get into Toptal"; that is not how the network works.
How to prepare
- Make sure your English communication is clear and confident on a call.
- Refresh fundamentals in your main stack and practise solving problems out loud.
- Block time for the test project so you can do it properly.
