UAE Golden Visa (Golden Residence)
The UAE's long-term residence permit. For engineers, the relevant route is the skilled professionals category: a 10-year residence for people in senior occupational levels with at least a bachelor's degree and a monthly salary of at least AED 30,000. Read the official ICP and u.ae pages before believing any agent.

The Golden Visa is the UAE's long-term residence, officially called the Golden Residence. Unlike an ordinary work residence tied to one employer for a couple of years, it lasts much longer and comes with extra freedoms. The ICP (the federal identity and residency authority) runs it, and the government portal u.ae summarises it.
Who it is for
Be realistic here. A fresh CS graduate from Lahore, Hyderabad, Dhaka or Lagos will usually not qualify straight away. It is something to aim for after a few years of strong work in the UAE, or if you are already a senior engineer. Knowing the conditions now helps you judge offers: a salary and title that would qualify you is worth more than one that would not.
The skilled professionals category
As of October 2026, ICP's Golden Residency guide lists "skilled professionals in senior occupational levels" for a 10-year residence. The conditions it gives:
- You are at occupational level one (chairpersons and chief executives) or level two (specialists) under the ministry of human resources classification.
- You hold at least a bachelor's degree or its equivalent.
- Your salary is at least AED 30,000 a month, or the equivalent in foreign currency.
- You have a valid work permit in the UAE under a valid, approved employment contract.
- You keep comprehensive health insurance for the whole residence.
The u.ae portal also lists a 10-year route for people with exceptional talent or rare specialisations, including PhD holders and specialists in priority scientific and engineering fields. Each subcategory has its own requirements, such as recommendation letters, experience or accredited degrees.
What it gives you
According to u.ae, Golden Visa holders can sponsor family members, including spouses and children, and can stay outside the UAE for longer than the usual six months without losing the residence.
How to use the official pages
- Start with ICP's eligibility check and the Golden Residency guide.
- Match your actual contract (title, level and salary) to the category, not what a recruiter says.
- Apply through ICP or, in Dubai, GDRFA, both linked from u.ae.
Common mistakes and scams
- Paying an agent who promises a Golden Visa. Eligibility depends on your documents, not on who you know. Use the official ICP and GDRFA channels.
- Counting allowances you are not sure about. Check which salary figure the authority uses for your category before assuming you qualify.
- Using an old blog post. The rules have changed several times since the scheme launched. Read the official page on the day you apply.
- Thinking it replaces a job. For skilled professionals the residence depends on a valid work permit and contract.
