Unity Learn: Junior Programmer Pathway

Unity's official, free guided pathway for learning C# scripting in Unity. You build small playable prototypes while learning variables, physics, user interfaces, data persistence and object-oriented programming. It is the most direct route from knowing a little Unity to writing your own gameplay code.

What it is

Junior Programmer is a free pathway on Unity Learn, Unity's official learning site. Unity estimates about 12 weeks at a beginner pace. It teaches C# scripting in Unity through small projects: you write player movement, spawn objects, handle collisions, build simple user interfaces, save data between scenes and sessions, and finish with the four pillars of object-oriented programming (abstraction, encapsulation, inheritance and polymorphism) applied to game code.

Along the way it covers practical habits that many tutorials skip: version control, debugging, project management, reading unfamiliar code and basic optimisation.

Prerequisites

Unity recommends basic knowledge of the editor first, or finishing the free Unity Essentials pathway before you start. You do not need prior C# experience, although any programming background helps you move faster.

Is it worth it?

For anyone choosing Unity, yes. It is official, free, kept reasonably up to date with Unity 6, and structured so each unit ends with something that runs. The main risk is following along without thinking. After each unit, change the project: add an enemy type, a second level or a score multiplier, without the instructions. That is where the learning happens.

It is not a game design course, and its prototypes look plain. Pair it with the Sefism roadmap's design and feel stages.

What you can do after it

You can write MonoBehaviour scripts with confidence, use prefabs and physics, build a basic UI, save data and structure code with classes. That is enough to take part in a game jam or finish a small game of your own. The pathway is also written to lead towards Unity's paid certification exams, which are optional.

Unity licence and pricing (as of 2026-09)

The Unity editor is free under Unity Personal for individuals and companies below US$200,000 in revenue and funding a year, according to Unity's pricing updates page. Above that, Unity Pro is required; Unity lists it at US$2,310 per seat per year after a 5% increase from 12 January 2026. Unity announced a per-install Runtime Fee in September 2023 and cancelled it on 12 September 2024. Check unity.com for current terms before you release a commercial game.

Common questions

Do I have to finish every unit? No. If you already know C#, skim the early units and focus on the projects and the object-oriented programming unit.

Is Unity Learn free? Yes, the pathways and tutorials are free with a Unity account.

Which Unity version? Use the version the pathway names for each project, or the current LTS release, and expect small interface differences.
