What it is
University of the People (UoPeople) is a non-profit, online university that describes itself as accredited, American and tuition-free. Its Bachelor of Science in Computer Science is taught fully online and asynchronously, with no live lectures, so students study around jobs and families. The official programme page (read 2026-09) lists 40 courses (19 general education and 21 in the major) and says it can be completed in less than two and a half years.
What it costs
There is no tuition, but there are fees. According to UoPeople's official fees page (read 2026-09):
- a one-time, non-refundable application fee of $60,
- an assessment fee of $180 for each undergraduate course,
- an estimated total of $7,260 for the Computer Science bachelor's.
The university says scholarships from donors are available on a first-come, first-served basis. Fees change, so confirm on the official fees page before enrolling.
Admission
Applicants must be at least 16, hold a high school diploma or equivalent, show English proficiency and complete UoPeople's foundation courses.
Is it worth it for a self-taught switcher?
A degree is not required for many software jobs, but it helps in some situations: employers that filter on degrees, government and bank roles in some countries, and visa rules for working abroad that count degrees. If those matter for you and a traditional degree is out of reach, a low-cost online degree can be a sensible long-term investment.
Be realistic about what it does and does not do:
- It is a long commitment. Budget several years and a steady weekly study load.
- It gives a credential, but employers will still look for projects and practical skills. Build a portfolio alongside it, using the same free resources as any self-taught learner.
- Recognition of online and non-traditional degrees varies by employer and country. Check with employers and any authority that matters to you, such as for a visa or further study, before relying on it.

If you only want the knowledge, the Open Source Society University curriculum, CS50 and The Odin Project are free. UoPeople is worth paying for when the credential itself matters.
