Upwork Help Center for freelancers
Upwork's official answers on fees, Connects, payment protection, Job Success Score, talent badges and account rules. Blog posts and videos about Upwork go out of date quickly because the platform changes its rules often; the help centre is updated continuously and is the place to check any fact before you act on it.

Why read the source instead of a video
Upwork changed a lot in 2025 and 2026: a variable 0% to 15% freelancer fee replaced the old tiers in May 2025, and Specialized Profiles were retired on 28 May 2026. Most YouTube tutorials and blog posts still describe the old rules. The help centre is written by Upwork, dated, and updated when policies change, so it is where a careful freelancer checks anything that affects money or their account.
The articles worth reading first
You do not need to read the whole centre. These answer most beginner questions:
- Learn about the Freelancer Service Fee: how the fee is set per contract, when you see it and worked examples of pricing for it.
- Understanding and using Connects: what proposals cost, which Connects are refunded (only when a client cancels a post or Upwork removes it) and how free Connects are earned.
- How do I create a 100% complete freelancer profile?: the required items (photo, overview, one employment item, one skill) and how portfolio items add to the score.
- How Fixed-Price Payment Protection works and Understanding milestones: why you never start before a milestone is Funded, and the 14-day review after you submit work.
- How Hourly Payment Protection works: tracked time, memos and weekly limits.
- All about your Job Success Score: how it is calculated over 6, 12 and 24 months, and why 90% is the mark to aim for.
- How to become a Rising Talent and How to become Top Rated: the exact criteria.
- Circumvention, and why it's against the rules and Recognize red flags and avoid scams: what gets accounts closed and what scams look like.
How to use it well
Read the fee, Connects and payment protection articles before your first proposal, not after your first problem. When a client suggests something unusual, such as paying outside Upwork, a free trial task or moving to another app, search the help centre first: there is usually an article with a polite sample reply you can use.
Limits
The help centre explains rules, not strategy. It will not tell you which niche to pick or how to write a proposal that wins. Some figures, such as the Freelancer Plus price and withdrawal fees, are only shown inside your account settings rather than in public articles.
Common questions
Is it free? Yes, and you can read it without logging in.
Does it cover agencies? Yes, with separate articles for agency badges and plans.
What if an article and a blog disagree? Trust the help centre article and check its last-updated date.
