What Upwork is

Upwork is a freelance marketplace where clients post jobs and freelancers apply with proposals, or where clients buy fixed-scope services from the Project Catalog. Work happens on hourly contracts, tracked with the Upwork desktop app, or on fixed-price contracts split into milestones. Upwork sits in the middle of the payment, which is the main reason many beginners start here.

What it costs (as of 2026-09)

Upwork's own help centre is the source for these figures, and they change, so check them before you rely on them:

• Freelancer Service Fee: 0% to 15% per contract. You see the exact percentage when you submit a proposal or receive an offer, and it is locked for that contract. This replaced the older sliding-scale fee in May 2025, so ignore guides that describe 20%, 10% and 5% tiers.
• Connects: proposals cost Connects, sold at $0.15 each. The number a job needs varies by job and is shown on the post. Some freelancers receive 10 free Connects a month, and each talent badge (Rising Talent, Top Rated, Top Rated Plus) awards 30.
• Freelancer Plus: an optional membership with 100 Connects a month and a 0% fee on Direct Contracts. Upwork shows its price under Membership plan in your account.
• Direct Contracts with clients you bring yourself carry a 5% fee (0% with Freelancer Plus).
• Withdrawals: a small per-transfer fee, shown in your Withdrawals settings, plus any fee charged by Payoneer, PayPal or your bank.

Is it worth it for a student?

It can be, if you treat it as a place to earn your first reviews rather than a quick income. The first contract is the hardest: you compete with experienced freelancers worldwide and have no Job Success Score yet. Freelancers who succeed early usually pick one narrow service, show two or three portfolio pieces that match it exactly, and send a few carefully written proposals to clients with a verified payment method and a hiring history rather than many generic ones.

Payment protection in one paragraph

On fixed-price contracts, start work only when a milestone shows as Funded, and deliver with Submit Work for Payment: the client then has 14 days to approve or request changes before funds release automatically. On hourly contracts, protection applies to time logged with the desktop app, with memos, within the weekly limit, for a client with a verified billing method. Manual time is not protected.

Rules that end accounts

Sharing contact details before a contract starts, or asking to be paid outside Upwork, breaks the Terms of Service even if no money moves. It can cost you your badges for six months or your account permanently. Requests for free "test" work and pressure to move to Telegram or WhatsApp are listed by Upwork as scam signals.

Common questions

Do I need to pay to start? No, but proposals need Connects, so budget a small amount or use free ones carefully.

Can I have several profiles? You have one profile. Specialized Profiles were retired on 28 May 2026; Upwork now highlights your most relevant work for each client.

Is it available in my country? Upwork works in most countries, but withdrawal methods differ; for example Payoneer is offered outside India and the US. Check Withdrawals in your settings.
