What it is
Wise sends money between countries and offers an account that can hold and convert many currencies. As of 2026-09 its homepage says it supports transfers in over 50 currencies to 140+ countries and that customers move over £12 billion a month; it is authorised by the UK Financial Conduct Authority as an electronic money institution (source: wise.com).
Why remote workers use it
Contractors paid by foreign clients often need account details in US dollars, euros or pounds so a client can pay them as if locally, then convert to local currency. Wise's model is to convert at the mid-market rate and show a separate fee, which makes the total cost easy to compare with a bank wire.
Availability differs by country
Which Wise features you can use (sending, receiving, holding balances, account details, a card) depends on where you live, and these change. Check Wise's help centre for your country before you promise a client you can be paid this way. In some countries, local rules also affect how foreign income should be received for tax or registration purposes; check your local rules.
Fees (as of 2026-09)
Fees depend on currency route and amount, and Wise shows the fee before you confirm. Do not rely on example figures from others; use the calculator on the official site for your exact route.
How to use it well
- Compare the amount that lands in your local account against at least one other method.
- Send yourself a small test payment before relying on it for a salary or invoice.
- Keep records of every payment for your tax return.
- Use two-factor authentication and never share login codes.
Common questions
Is it a bank? It is a regulated money service; check the protections that apply in your country on its site.
Can my employer pay my salary into it? EOR salaries usually go to a local bank account; Wise is more common for contractors.
Is it the cheapest? Often competitive, but compare for your route.
