What it is
Write the Docs runs a free Slack workspace for its community. The signup page says over 22,500 people have joined. Because of spam, you fill in a short form to get an invitation rather than joining instantly.
Useful channels named on the signup page include:
- #intros to introduce yourself.
- #general for documentation discussion.
- #career-advice for questions about getting into and growing in documentation work.
- #job-posts-only for job listings.
- Topic channels such as API documentation, Sphinx and Confluence, plus location-based channels.
The Write the Docs code of conduct applies in Slack, and the community aims to be welcoming to newcomers.
Is it worth joining?
If you are serious about technical writing, yes. Technical writing is a small field compared with software engineering, and much of the practical knowledge, such as which tools teams really use, what a writing test looks like or how contract rates are discussed, lives in communities like this. Reading the career channel for a few weeks teaches you a lot about the job market, including honest accounts of how hard some periods are.
It is also a way to get feedback on your portfolio samples, as long as you ask specific questions and respect people's time.
How to use it well
- Introduce yourself in one short message: your background, what you are learning and what you want to write.
- Search before asking. Many beginner questions have been answered in detail.
- When you ask for feedback, share one sample and one question, such as whether a procedure is easy to follow.
- Watch the job channel to learn which skills postings mention, even before you apply.
Safety
Treat job posts with the same care as anywhere else. Legitimate employers do not ask you to pay for training, equipment or a trial. If an offer arrives by private message with no interview, or asks for payment or bank details early, stop and verify the company independently.
Free vs paid
Free. The community runs on Slack's free plan; the signup page explains that a paid plan for a community this size would be very expensive.
Common questions
Do I need to be a technical writer already? No. Students, developers and career switchers are welcome.
Will I get a job from it? Not automatically. It helps you learn the field, meet people and see openings; the portfolio still does the work.

Stuck on something specific?
Writing only gets you so far. If you want an answer to your situation rather than the general case, book a session and we will work through it together. Sessions are free for approved Sefism members, and a few slots open each week.
