Zoho Invoice
Free invoicing software for freelancers and small businesses: numbered invoices and quotes, clients, multiple currencies, payment reminders and simple reports. For a direct freelancer it replaces ad hoc invoices typed in a word processor and doubles as a record of what you have billed and been paid.

What it does
Zoho Invoice lets you create professional, numbered invoices and quotes, keep a list of clients, record payments, send reminders for overdue invoices and see what is owed to you. It works in the browser and on mobile, and it is available in many countries through Zoho's regional sites.
Free and its limits (as of 2026-09)
Zoho's pricing page states that Zoho Invoice is free for small business owners, freelancers and entrepreneurs. The FAQ on the same page lists the limits: up to two users, a maximum of three projects and up to 500 invoices a year. Invoices on free accounts carry "Powered by Zoho Invoice" branding. For a student or early-career freelancer, those limits are rarely a problem.
Why a freelancer needs proper invoices
- Direct clients need them. Businesses usually cannot pay without an invoice for their own accounts.
- Numbering and dates matter. Sequential invoice numbers, issue dates and due dates make your records easy to follow for you, your bank and a tax adviser.
- Reminders get you paid. Polite automatic reminders do the awkward chasing for you.
- Your income record. A list of invoices and payments is the backbone of the monthly record you will need for tax and for questions from your bank.
On Upwork and Fiverr the platform produces invoices for you, so this matters most for direct work, retainers and clients who pay by transfer through Payoneer, Wise or a bank.
What a good invoice includes
Your name and contact details, the client's details, an invoice number, the issue date and due date, a clear description of the work (ideally matching a milestone in your agreement), the amount and currency, and how to pay. Add the payment reference you want the client to use, and state who pays transfer fees if your agreement says so.
Things to check locally
Some countries require specific details on invoices, such as a tax registration number, or have rules for invoicing foreign clients for services. The software will not know these rules for you; check your local requirements or ask an accountant.
Common questions
Can I invoice in US dollars while living elsewhere? Yes, you can set the currency per client or invoice.
Can clients pay through it? Zoho supports online payment gateways in some regions; availability differs by country, so most early freelancers include bank or Payoneer details instead.
