Freelancing

Stage 5 of 8 · 7 lessons · ~4 weeks

Landing your first clients

Find the right first clients and get replies: targeted Upwork proposals, Fiverr briefs and fast responses, or warm introductions and outreach that is not spam, plus the discovery questions and red flags that apply everywhere.

Start: Choosing which job posts to apply to

Lessons· one lesson for each topic, in this order

  1. 1Choosing which job posts to apply to
  2. 2A proposal clients read past the first lines
  3. 3A Connects and proposal routine
  4. 4Invites, interviews and contract offers
  5. 5Discovery questions before you quote
  6. 6Spotting clients to avoid
  7. 7A weekly routine for finding work

Do this

  • Check the client details on every post before spending Connects.
  • Write a proposal skeleton, then customise the first two lines for each post.
  • Send a small number of strong proposals each week and track Connects, views and replies.
  • Keep all conversation on Upwork until a contract starts.
  • Ask discovery questions before agreeing a price or milestones.
  • Accept only offers whose terms match what you discussed, with the first milestone funded.
  • Review your numbers after 20 proposals and change one thing at a time.

Practise

  • Your weekly proposal routine happens here: vet posts, then send a few strong proposals

Keep handy

Also worth your time

Before moving on: Four weeks of a tracked client-finding routine (proposals, brief replies or outreach with results), at least one discovery conversation, and your first paid project or a clear list of what to change next.

Tauseef's advice
Fewer, better attempts win. Ten proposals or messages that show you understood the client's problem beat a hundred copies. And if a first client feels wrong, walk away: a bad first client can cost you a review, weeks of work or your account.
