Layoffs and AI: stay hard to cut, bounce back if it happens

Stage 3 · Lesson 7 of 7

Be the person people can count on

Be hard to cut at work

is what people say about you when you are not there, and in a layoff discussion it is often a single sentence: "she always delivers" or "he is hard to work with". It is built from small things repeated: meeting the dates you give, saying early when a date will slip, answering messages, handling incidents calmly, not leaving messes for others.

Attitude counts too. In a tense period, people who complain loudly or spread rumours are remembered for it. This is not about working longer hours, which rarely protects anyone. It is about being predictable and easy to work with.

Common trapthinking only skills matter. Two engineers of equal skill are not equally safe if one is known as dependable and the other as difficult.
