Stage 2 · Lesson 6 of 8
PortFast, BPDU Guard and Root Guard
Spanning tree makes a newly connected port wait before forwarding, which is a nuisance for PCs and phones that just want an address. makes forward immediately. Because a PortFast port assumes no is attached, pair it with BPDU Guard, which shuts the port if spanning tree messages (BPDUs) arrive on it, meaning someone plugged in a switch.
Root Guard, on ports facing downstream switches, stops them from ever becoming root, and Loop Guard protects against a link that fails in only one direction. These four commands are standard on every well-run access switch.
Common trapenabling PortFast on a link to another switch, which can create a short loop the moment it comes up.
