Stage 5 · Lesson 3 of 6
Keep it going by listening
You do not need to be interesting to have a good conversation; you need to be interested. Ask open questions that cannot be answered with yes or no: "How did you get into data engineering?", "What is the hardest part of your job?" Listen to the answer and ask a follow-up about something they said.
Share a little about yourself in return so it does not feel one-sided. People tend to remember how a conversation made them feel more than what was said. Dale Carnegie's old advice still holds: let the other person talk about themselves and remember their name.
Common trapplanning your next sentence instead of listening.
