Tech jobs abroad

Stage 1 · Lesson 5 of 7

Nationals first: Emiratisation, Nitaqat and Qatarization

Decide if, and where

All three Gulf countries want more of their own citizens in private sector jobs, and that shapes who gets hired from abroad. In the UAE, sets yearly targets for the share of Emirati staff in larger private companies. In Saudi Arabia, the programme grades companies into bands by their share of Saudi employees, and some job titles are reserved for or largely localised to Saudi nationals.

Qatar runs its own policy. For you, this means two things. Gulf employers hire foreign engineers mostly where skills are scarce, such as cloud, cybersecurity, data and AI, and mostly with several years of experience. And junior generalist roles are where competition with nationals is strongest.

Common trapassuming the Gulf is easy because many relatives went there in other professions and other decades.
