Stage 6 · Lesson 5 of 6

Negotiating salary in a new market

The offer and the move

Negotiate from local data, not your home salary. Look up ranges for your role and level in that city on salary sites, official salary surveys and job ads that list pay, and ask people who work there. Give a range at the top of what your evidence supports.

Remember visa minimums: in the UK, Germany, Ireland and Singapore, the offer must clear a for the permit, so an employer cannot go below it anyway. Negotiate calmly in writing, with one or two specific asks, and be ready to accept. In the Gulf, ask whether the number is basic plus or total.

Common trapanchoring to your home salary times two, which feels huge to you and is often below what the company already budgeted.
