Chapter 1 · Practice 1 of 4
Start from your goal and your reader, then pick the format
From Pick your formats
Why it matters
Formats are tools. Before choosing one, write down two things: what you want the content to do and who it is for. Then match:
| Goal | Reader | Good formats |
|---|---|---|
| Get hired or noticed by peers | Engineers and hiring managers | Technical blog posts, LinkedIn posts |
| Teach beginners | Students and juniors | YouTube tutorials, Shorts, blog posts with code |
| Build a direct audience | Regular readers in your niche | Newsletter |
| Find freelance clients | Business owners | Case study posts, LinkedIn |
| Sell a product later | People with the problem it solves | Newsletter plus one public channel |
Most developers do best with one main format they are good at and one or two light channels to share it.
Do
- Write your goal and reader before choosing a format
- Pick one main format and one or two channels to share it
Avoid
- Starting on five platforms at once because others do
