How to Learn a New Programming Language or Framework

Opens with credits

A practical guide to learning a new programming language, framework or tool efficiently, checked against official documentation such as the Rust Book, the Tour of Go and the Python tutorial, a major review of learning techniques in psychology, and Anthropic's 2026 randomised study on AI assistance and coding skills. It covers setting a goal, starting from official docs, building small projects, deliberate practice, remembering what you learn, reading real code and learning with AI assistants without outsourcing your understanding.

About this guide

These best practices are for developers and students who need to learn a new programming language, framework or tool, whether for a new job, a client project or simple curiosity. Most people learn new technologies the slow way: a long video course watched at double speed, a few copied tutorials, and then confusion the first time they face a real problem. A more deliberate approach gets you productive faster and leaves you with knowledge that lasts.

The guide is checked against sources that describe how people actually learn. Official documentation, such as the Rust Book, the Tour of Go, Effective Go and the Python tutorial, is the starting point for any language. A widely cited 2013 review of ten learning techniques, published in Psychological Science in the Public Interest, rated practice testing and spaced practice as the most useful and rereading and highlighting as among the least. Anthropic's January 2026 randomised study of 52 mostly junior engineers learning an unfamiliar Python library found that those who used AI assistance scored lower on a follow-up quiz, and that how they used the AI mattered a lot.

The first chapters cover setting a clear goal and learning from official docs. Later chapters cover building small projects, deliberate practice, remembering what you learn, reading real code, learning with AI assistants and keeping the habit going. Using AI tools for everyday delivery work is covered in the AI coding assistant best practices guide; this guide focuses on learning.

Each chapter ends with a short quiz, which is itself an example of the retrieval practice the guide recommends. The approach works the same whether you are a student in Peshawar picking up your first framework or a senior engineer in Toronto moving to a new language.

Common questions

What is the fastest way to learn a new programming language?

Set a concrete goal, start with the official tutorial, and build a tiny project within the first few days. Then grow project size in steps, practise your weak spots with fast feedback from linters and tests, and test yourself instead of rereading. Rebuilding a project you already know is one of the quickest ways to see what is different.

Should I learn from official documentation or video courses?

Start with the official documentation where it has a tutorial, because it is maintained by the people who design the technology and matches the current version. Use videos and courses as a second explanation when something does not click, and check which version they were made for.

Does using AI make it harder to learn to code?

It can. In Anthropic's January 2026 randomised study, engineers learning a new Python library with AI help averaged 50% on a follow-up quiz against 67% for those coding by hand, with the biggest gap in debugging. Participants who used AI to ask conceptual questions and get explanations scored much better than those who delegated the code.

What are the most effective study techniques for programming?

A widely cited 2013 review of learning techniques rated practice testing (retrieving from memory) and distributed practice (spacing study over time) as the most useful, and rereading, highlighting and summarising as among the least. For programming, that means writing code from memory, answering questions before looking back and studying in shorter sessions across days.

How long does it take to learn a new framework?

It depends on your goal and what transfers from what you know. Fixing one bug may need a few hours of targeted reading; becoming productive on a team that uses the framework daily usually takes weeks of real project work. Defining a concrete, time-boxed goal is more useful than estimating time to "know" it.
