About this checklist

A LinkedIn profile checklist for developers is useful because most profiles fail in the same few places: a blurry photo, a headline that only says "Student", an empty About section and job entries that list duties instead of results. Recruiters and hiring managers scan a developer LinkedIn profile in seconds, so the top of the page has to say what you build, with what, and what you want next.

This checklist walks through your LinkedIn profile in the order people read it. It starts with the first impression (photo, banner, headline and custom URL), then the About and Featured sections, then Experience, Skills and recommendations. Later chapters cover the Open to Work feature and its visibility trade-off, how to be found in recruiter searches, what to post and the privacy settings to check before you change jobs.

Every item says what to do and how to tell it is done. Feature names and limits were checked against LinkedIn's own Help Center in October 2026. LinkedIn changes its menus often, so if a button has moved, search the Help Center for the feature name used here. The advice works whether you are a fresh graduate in Lahore or a mid-level engineer applying to remote roles anywhere.

Common questions

Should I turn on Open to Work on LinkedIn while I am still employed?

You can, but choose Recruiters only. That setting shows your status only to people using LinkedIn Recruiter and adds no photo frame. LinkedIn tries to hide it from recruiters at your current company, but says it cannot promise complete privacy, so assume your employer could find out.

What should a developer write in the LinkedIn headline?

Name the role you want, two or three technologies you use and one thing that makes you specific. For example: "Backend Developer | Node.js, PostgreSQL | Payment APIs". Put the job title first because only the start of the headline shows in search results and comments.

How many skills should I add to my LinkedIn profile?

LinkedIn allows up to 100 skills, but a focused list of the skills that appear in the job posts you target works better. Use the standard names LinkedIn suggests and attach skills to the Experience entries where you used them.

How do I change my LinkedIn profile URL?

Go to your profile, open Public profile and URL, and edit your custom URL. It must be 3 to 100 characters with no spaces, symbols or the word LinkedIn. You can change it up to five times in six months, so pick one you will keep.

What should a fresh graduate with no experience put on LinkedIn?

Use Projects, internships, teaching assistant roles, society leadership and open source contributions, written as outcomes. Feature your best repo or live demo, and write an About section that says what you build and what role you want.

How do I edit my LinkedIn profile without notifying my network?

Go to Settings and Privacy, then Visibility, and turn off the option to share profile updates with your network before you edit. Anyone who visits your profile will still see the changes, and you can turn sharing back on when you want to announce a new job.
