Chapter 08
Growing your practice
Turning first clients into steady work: repeat clients, higher rates, retainers, platform badges or referrals, and help from others when you have more work than hours.
Repeat client
- What
- A client who hires you again. Every good project is a chance to suggest the next useful piece of work.
- Why
- Winning work from an existing client takes far less time than finding a new one, and on Upwork long relationships also help your Job Success Score.
Retainer
Also called monthly plan, maintenance plan
- What
- A monthly agreement for a set amount of work or availability, such as ongoing site updates, fixes and reports, paid each month.
- Why
- It smooths your income and turns one-off projects into steady relationships. Fiverr subscriptions and Upwork ongoing contracts serve the same purpose.
Watch out
An unlimited "whatever you need" retainer with no cap on hours or requests.
Raising your rates
- What
- Charging new clients more as your portfolio and reviews grow, and giving existing clients notice before their rate changes.
- Why
- Your first rate was set with no proof. Staying there once you have proof means working more hours for the same money.
- Example
- From 1 March my rate for new projects is $25 an hour. Your current work stays at $20 until the end of April.
Referral habit
- What
- A routine of asking every happy client for an introduction, thanking people who refer you, and keeping in touch with past clients every few months.
- Why
- For direct freelancers, referrals from past clients become the main source of new work over time.
Capacity planning
Also called capacity
- What
- Tracking how many hours your projects really take and how many you have, before saying yes to new work.
- Why
- Overbooking leads to late delivery and poor reviews. Time tracking shows your true hourly rate on fixed-price work too.
Subcontracting and a small agency
- What
- Passing part of your work to other freelancers you pay and supervise, and eventually running a small team under one name.
- Why
- It lets you take on more than your own hours allow, but you stay responsible to the client for quality, deadlines and confidentiality.
Watch out
Handing client work to someone you have not tested, or sharing client data without the client's agreement.
Channel mix
- What
- Getting clients from more than one source, such as a platform plus referrals and a portfolio site, so one change does not stop your income.
- Why
- Platforms change fees, rules and search overnight, as the 2025 and 2026 Upwork changes showed. A second channel is insurance.
