Tech jobs abroad: Gulf

Sefism.

Chapter 01

Decide if, and where

Your reason to move, the money that really matters and the people who move with you, before any application.

Relocation goal

What
Two or three sentences on what moving for work should change for you: savings, career growth, safety, family life or long-term residence.
Why
It decides the destination, the visa route and which trade-offs you can accept, and it is the honest answer to "why this country?" in hiring rounds.
Example
"Save enough in four years to buy a home and move into cloud security" points to the Gulf; "settle with my family long term" points to routes with a clear path to permanent residence.

Watch out

Moving because friends are going, without a reason you could explain in one sentence.

Remote job or relocation

Also called work remotely or move abroad

What
The choice between working for a foreign company from home and moving to that country on a work visa.
Why
A remote role can give foreign pay without visas, rent abroad or distance from family, while relocation can give residence, a stronger local network and roles that are not open remotely.

Watch out

Comparing a foreign salary with a home salary and forgetting a remote role abroad was a third option.

Net monthly saving

What
What is left each month after income tax, social contributions, rent, transport, food, insurance, school fees and money you send home.
Why
It is the number that shows whether a move is worth it and the fair way to compare two cities or two offers.
Example
Offer A pays more but rent takes 45 percent of take-home pay; Offer B pays less in a cheaper city with family housing included and saves more each month.

Watch out

Converting the gross salary into your home currency and calling the difference profit.

Cost of living comparison

Also called cost of living index, Numbeo

What
A comparison of typical prices for rent, food, transport and services between two cities, often from crowd-sourced sites.
Why
It gives a first idea of how far a salary goes, before you check real rent listings and official tax calculators.

Watch out

Treating a crowd-sourced average as exact; rent varies hugely by area and by how early you book.

Dependant rules

Also called dependants, family visa, family reunion

What
The conditions under which a spouse or children can join you on your visa, sometimes with a minimum salary, housing or waiting period, and rules on whether a partner may work.
Why
They decide whether your family can move with you, later or not at all, and what that costs.

Watch out

Accepting an offer alone and assuming the family can follow, then finding the salary is below the family threshold.

Family move plan

What
A written agreement with the people affected by your move on who goes when, what it costs, who supports parents at home and what happens if the job ends early.
Why
It prevents pressure to accept a bad offer and keeps everyone clear about the risks.

Watch out

Committing family savings to a move before the contract and visa are settled.

Intra-company transfer

Also called ICT, internal transfer

What
Moving to an overseas office of the company you already work for, often on a dedicated visa route.
Why
It is one of the most reliable ways to move early in a career: the employer already knows you and handles the paperwork.

Watch out

Ignoring multinationals and outsourcing firms at home that regularly send engineers to overseas offices.

Main and backup destination

What
One destination you focus on, plus one backup, each with a visa route, target roles and cities and a target move date.
Why
Each country has its own CV norms, job boards, paperwork and degree checks, so focus makes progress possible.

Watch out

Spreading effort across six countries and learning none of their systems properly.

Nationals-first hiring

Also called Emiratisation, Saudization, Qatarization, localisation

What
Gulf government policies that set targets or quotas for citizens in private sector jobs: Emiratisation in the UAE, Saudization through Nitaqat in Saudi Arabia and Qatarization in Qatar.
Why
They push employers to hire foreigners mainly where skills are scarce and experience is high, so junior generalist roles are the most competitive.

Watch out

Assuming the Gulf is easy because relatives found work there in other professions and other decades.

Nitaqat

Also called Saudization

What
Saudi Arabia's programme that grades private companies into bands by the share of Saudi nationals they employ, with some professions localised for Saudis.
Why
A company's band affects how easily it can get work visas for foreign staff, which shapes who it hires from abroad.

Watch out

Applying for job titles that are reserved for or largely localised to Saudi nationals.
