Chapter 05

A profile employers abroad will shortlist

CV, LinkedIn and portfolio, adjusted to local norms and written for a recruiter who does not know your country.

Employer context line

What
One line under each employer on your CV saying what the company does, its size or users and who its customers are.
Why
Recruiters abroad rarely know your employer, and the line makes your experience count.
Example
"Payments company serving 2 million users across Pakistan; 120 engineers."

Watch out

Listing local company names and abbreviations with no explanation.

Impact bullet

Also called achievement bullet

What
A CV line that states what you did and the measurable result, rather than a duty.
Why
Numbers such as users, latency or hours saved are readable in any country.
Example
"Cut checkout API response time from 900 ms to 250 ms by adding caching and fixing slow queries."

Watch out

Copying responsibilities from a job description.

Visa status line

What
One honest line in your CV header and LinkedIn summary with your location, what permit you need or hold, and your notice period.
Why
It answers the recruiter's first question and filters you towards employers who can sponsor.
Example
"Based in Dhaka. Needs an Employment Pass. Available with one month's notice."

Watch out

Hiding the need for a visa until the final round.

Right to work

What
Your legal permission to work in a country, from citizenship, a residence permit or a visa that allows employment.
Why
Employers must check it before you start, and some can only hire people who already have it.

Watch out

Claiming a right to work you do not have; it is checked and ends the offer.

Local CV norms

What
What recruiters in a country expect in a CV: length, photo, personal details, dates and format.
Why
A CV that looks unfamiliar is read as a candidate unfamiliar with the market.
Code
Length: 2 pages, reverse chronological
Show: nationality, location, visa status,
  notice period, certifications near top
Photo: common, keep it professional
Leave out: passport number, religion,
  full date of birth

Watch out

Sending the same CV to every country.

ATS-friendly CV

Also called applicant tracking system, ATS

What
A CV with standard headings, plain text and no tables or graphics, so the software many employers and job boards use can read it.
Why
Gulf job boards, agencies and large employers parse CVs automatically before a human sees them.

Watch out

A two-column design whose text the parser scrambles.

Open to Work settings

What
LinkedIn settings that tell recruiters the roles and locations you want, visible to everyone or only to recruiters.
Why
Recruiters search by location; adding your target cities puts you in their results while your profile location stays truthful.

Watch out

Changing your profile location to a city you do not live in.

Project case study

What
A short write-up of a project: the problem, your decisions and trade-offs, the result and what you would change.
Why
Checkable work fills the gap when a recruiter cannot judge your university or employer.

Watch out

Linking tutorial clones and unfinished repositories.

Background check

Also called pre-employment screening

What
An employer's check of your education, past jobs and sometimes criminal record after an offer.
Why
Differences between your CV and your documents can end an offer at this stage.

Watch out

Rounding up dates or titles on the CV that your experience letters do not support.
