What it is
Insight Timer is a meditation app and website that started as a simple timer and grew into one of the largest free libraries of guided meditations. Teachers from many traditions, as well as psychologists and sleep coaches, publish to it, so you can find short sessions for stress, anxiety, focus, sleep, self-compassion and more. The site says over 250,000 free tracks are available and invites you to "join 30 million people".
What you get
- A huge free library of guided meditations, talks, music and sleep content, searchable by topic, length and teacher.
- A customisable timer with bells and interval sounds for unguided practice.
- Communities and live events, some free and some paid.
- Member Plus, an optional paid plan with structured courses and offline listening; check the app for the price in your country.
Who it suits
People who tried one meditation app and did not like the voice or style, students looking for short sessions between classes, and anyone with trouble falling asleep. Because the library is large, it is easy to find content in a style you like.
How to use it well
- Filter by length (5 or 10 minutes) and save three sessions you like; do not spend your practice time browsing.
- Use the timer once you know the basics.
- Be selective. Quality varies because anyone can publish; prefer well-rated teachers and evidence-based approaches.
- Know the limits. Meditation supports wellbeing but does not replace treatment. If low mood, panic or sleep problems last for weeks, see the Looking after your mental health roadmap for when to get help.
Pair it with on Sefism
- The Looking after your mental health roadmap covers stress, sleep and when to get help.
- Focus, habits and time covers rest, routines and getting started when motivation is gone.
- If you want a simpler, fully free app, try Medito.
- Ask Tauseef a question if you want advice on your own situation.
Best for: a large free library of meditations and sleep tracks with many teachers to choose from.

Stuck on something specific?
Writing only gets you so far. If you want an answer to your situation rather than the general case, book a session and we will work through it together. Sessions are free for approved Sefism members, and a few slots open each week.
