What it is
The Notion Education Plan is a free plan for students and teachers. Notion's help centre describes two types:
- Individual students and teachers: a free plan for a one-member workspace.
- Student organisations: a free plan for a workspace with multiple members, for verified student organisations that apply.
Who can apply
Individual students and teachers at accredited colleges and universities, signed in with their institution's email. Notion checks the email domain against the World Higher Education Database (WHED). It does not accept student IDs or other documents for verification, so you need a working school email.
Timeline
There is no deadline: upgrade whenever you like. Each school email can claim the plan once, for one workspace.
How to get in
- Sign up or sign in with your school email.
- Open Settings, then Upgrade plan, and choose the free Education Plan. If your school is recognised, the upgrade is automatic.
- If the option does not appear, follow the help article's steps to request access for your domain.
- Remove extra members from the workspace first if Notion asks; the individual plan is for one person.
Upgrading that workspace to a paid plan later permanently ends its Education eligibility.
What you get
The features of a paid Notion plan for a personal workspace, free for as long as it stays tied to your school email. Notion AI is not included by default; Notion has offered students discounts on it, so check the current terms.
How to use it well

Stuck on something specific?
Writing only gets you so far. If you want an answer to your situation rather than the general case, book a session and we will work through it together. Sessions are free for approved Sefism members, and a few slots open each week.
