What this checklist is
A checklist for developers setting up or fixing a profile on freelance marketplaces such as Upwork, Fiverr, Toptal and Contra. It covers choosing platforms and reading their fees, picking a niche, writing the title and overview, building a portfolio, setting rates, winning first jobs, writing proposals, earning reviews and badges, and following each platform's rules on contact, payments and conduct as their official help pages state them.
It has 9 chapters and 31 checks, each with how to verify it and how much it matters. For developers starting on freelance marketplaces.
Chapter by chapter
1. Choose platforms and read their fees (4 checks)
Each marketplace works differently and charges differently. Know how you will find work and what you keep before you invest time in a profile.
2. Niche and title (3 checks)
Your title and niche decide whether you appear in the right searches and whether a client clicks. Make them specific.
3. Overview, photo and verification (4 checks)
The overview turns a click into an invite or an order. Lead with the client's problem, keep it truthful, and complete verification.
4. Portfolio pieces (3 checks)
Proof beats claims. Show a few strong, relevant projects explained in terms clients care about.
5. Rates (3 checks)
Set rates from your costs and value, with platform fees included, and raise them as proof builds up.
6. First jobs strategy (3 checks)
The first few reviews are the hardest to get. Choose small, winnable jobs and deliver them exceptionally well.
7. Proposals and responses (3 checks)
On proposal-based platforms, the first lines decide whether a client reads on. On gig platforms, response speed and clarity matter just as much.
8. Reviews, scores and badges (4 checks)
Reviews and platform scores drive search ranking and trust. Understand how they are calculated on the platforms you use.
9. Platform rules and staying in good standing (4 checks)
Breaking platform rules can cost you your account and your payment protection. Know the rules on contact, payments and account use.
How it works on Sefism
The checklist is one page: each check has a severity (must, should or nice to have) and a concrete way to verify it, and members can tick checks off as they go. The opening chapters are open to everyone. Adding it to your account uses credits, opens every chapter and keeps your progress.
Every claim is checked against the sources listed on the page (8 cited).
