What it is
Summer of Bitcoin is a remote summer internship for students, focused on Bitcoin open source development and design. Students spend 12 weeks contributing to a project with a Bitcoin organisation, guided by a mentor, much like Google Summer of Code but for one ecosystem. There are developer and designer tracks.
Who can apply
According to the student guide, you must be a student enrolled in a university or high school programme, with strong programming or design skills and some open source experience. The programme asks that nothing take precedence over your project during the 12 weeks, so a second job is not a good idea.
Timeline
For 2026:
- Applications closed on 15 February.
- Challenge round (bootcamp): 16 February to 20 March, with weekly coding or design challenges.
- Organisations and project ideas published by 31 March.
- Proposals due by 20 April.
- Project period over the summer, with evaluations in early July and late August.
Expect a similar cycle each year and check the official site.
How to get in
- Learn Bitcoin basics before applying: transactions, keys and how a node works.
- Show open source work on GitHub; the screening looks at portfolios and contributions.
- Take the challenge round seriously. It is the main filter.
- Talk to organisations early and write a proposal with weekly milestones.
What you get
A stipend paid in bitcoin in two instalments (40% after the midterm and 60% after the final evaluation), calculated with purchasing power parity. The guide lists $3,000 for Pakistan, India and Bangladesh and $6,000 for the United States. Payment in local currency can be requested where BTC is impractical. You also gain a mentor and public contributions.
