Traversy Media (YouTube channel)
Brad Traversy's long-running channel of practical web development tutorials: HTML, CSS and JavaScript crash courses, React and Vue, Node.js, Python and PHP back ends, and many full project builds. The style is calm, project-first and easy to follow. It suits beginners and self-taught developers who learn best by building a complete app alongside the video.

What the channel covers
Traversy Media is one of the oldest and best known web development channels on YouTube, run by Brad Traversy. In the channel's own words it covers everything from the building blocks of HTML, CSS and JavaScript to frontend frameworks like React and Vue and backend technologies like Node.js, Python and PHP.
The signature formats are the crash course (one long video that gets you productive in a technology in an afternoon) and the project build, where a complete app is built from an empty folder. Brad explains as he types, so you see the decisions and the mistakes, not just a finished result.
Playlists to start with
- JavaScript DOM Crash Course: working with the page from plain JavaScript, a must before any framework.
- JavaScript: Under The Hood: how the language actually runs, for when the basics feel shaky.
- Responsive Portfolio Website Project: a practical HTML and CSS build you can adapt into your own portfolio.
- Learn The MERN Stack: MongoDB, Express, React and Node.js together in one project.
- React Projects: several smaller React builds to practise components, state and data fetching.
- Node.js Videos and Python Videos: back end material collected by language.
- PHP REST API From Scratch: an API built without a framework, which teaches what frameworks do for you.
- Exploring Docker: containers from a web developer's point of view.
Some older playlists use versions of libraries that have since changed. The ideas still hold, but check the current documentation when something does not install or behave as shown.
Who it suits
Beginners who have done a little HTML and want to build real things, career switchers working through web development on their own, and developers picking up a new stack who want one long, friendly video before reading the docs.
How to learn without getting stuck in tutorial loops
- Code along once, then rebuild without the video. The second build, from memory and documentation, is where you learn.
- Change the project. Turn the task app into something you care about, add a feature Brad did not build, or swap the database.
- Stop at the crash course. After a crash course, move to your own project rather than straight into the next crash course.
- Deploy everything. A project that is live on the internet teaches you hosting, environment variables and debugging that no tutorial covers.
Pair it with on Sefism
- Follow the Frontend development roadmap, the Backend development roadmap or the Full stack development roadmap for the order of topics, and use the matching frontend, backend and full stack cheat sheets as you build.
- Pick projects that go beyond a tutorial clone with help from How to build a developer portfolio as a beginner.
- Strengthen the foundations with JavaScript.info, The Odin Project and Full Stack Open.

Stuck on something specific?
Writing only gets you so far. If you want an answer to your situation rather than the general case, book a session and we will work through it together. Sessions are free for approved Sefism members, and a few slots open each week.
