Switch into tech

Stage 7 · Lesson 5 of 9

Freelance or volunteer work first

Getting in the door

means taking small projects for real clients, paid or volunteer, before or while you apply for jobs. They create proof and references faster than personal projects. Examples: a website for a local business, a for a , an automation for a former colleague's team, or testing a small app.

Your old network is often your first client. Agree a written (what you will and will not do), a timeline and a price, even if the price is low. Ask for a short at the end.

Some switchers turn this into steady income, and Sefism's Freelancing roadmap covers that path.

Common trapworking for free without a scope, which leads to endless changes, no finished result and nothing you can show.

A question to check yourself, an AI practice session and 1 cheat sheet entry come when you add the roadmap to your account. Add it
