Building real confidence

Stage 6 · Lesson 3 of 6

Mistakes as part of learning

Setbacks, rejection and keeping your confidence

In many classrooms, mistakes are punished, so people learn to hide them. In learning and in good workplaces, mistakes are how you improve. Carol Dweck's research on mindset suggests that people who see ability as something they can develop tend to engage more with challenges and feedback; later studies found the effects of short mindset programmes are often small, so treat it as a useful lens rather than a magic switch.

In practice: when you make a mistake, say what happened, what you learned and what you will do differently. At work, owning a mistake early is respected far more than hiding it.

Common trapeither hiding mistakes, which makes them bigger, or treating each one as proof you are not capable.
